First Image Released from "Star Wars: Visions" Volume 3 Highlighting Shinya Ohira's Short Film "Black"

Shinya Ohira is one of Japan's most acclaimed and accomplished animators.

Today we got the first still image for the highly anticipated Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, which is coming to Disney+ later this year from Lucasfilm.

What’s happening:

  • Star Wars: Visions is an anthology animated series featuring work from animators all around the world, though Volume 1 & 3 have focused entirely on Japan.
  • As animator Shinya Ohira’s new Star Wars: Visions short film “Black" has been announced as an official selection for Annecy International Animation Festival’s 2025 official shorts competition (taking place from June 8-14 this year), the first image from Volume 3 has hit the internet. The image is viewable above.
  • Shinya Ohira is perhaps best known to western audiences for his work on the animated segment in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol.1 (2003), but he has also contributed to Genius Party Beyond (2008), Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence (2004), Akira (1988), and Studio Ghibli movies such as The Boy and the Heron (2023) and The Wind Rises (2013).

  • Animation Magazine: “The Annecy International Animation Film Festival has revealed the list of 35 shorts selected for the official competition in its upcoming edition, scheduled for June 8-14. According to the organizers, over 3,900 shorts from a hundred countries were submitted for consideration."

More information about Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 is expected to come out of the series’ panel at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan next month.
