Disney Places 45 Cast Members on Leave After Trump Administration Strips Legal Protections from Venezuelan Immigrants

The cast members will maintain their benefits during the leave.

After the US Supreme Court granted the Trump administration the right to strip Venezuelans of their legal protections, Disney has placed nearly 50 workers on leave in a move to protect the employees.

What’s Happening:

  • The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Walt Disney World has placed 45 workers on leave after the Supreme Court granted the Trump administration the right to strip Venezuelans of legal protections.
  • According to a statement made by The Walt Disney Company, the leave was enacted to make sure employees weren’t in violation of the law, but are still providing the affected cast members with benefits.
  • They also shared “We are committed to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of all our employees who may be navigating changing immigration policies and how they could impact them or their families."
  • Two thirds of the positions are union jobs, which offers employees the ability to maintain their seniority and benefits within a year of returning to their position.
  • While the move, at a first glance, seems disheartening, the action was made to protect these employees, comply with the law, and prevent things like immigration raids from happening at Walt Disney World.
  • The order affects as many as 350,000 Venezuelans, leaving them vulnerable to deportation.
  • The Trump administration is also looking to remove protections for immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua.
  • A coalition of unions that oversee positions at the Walt Disney World shared in a joint statement “These workers — our colleagues, friends, and neighbors — have contributed immensely to the success of the Walt Disney Company and to the vibrant culture of central Florida. No worker should have to live in fear of losing everything after building a life here."
  • All in all, Disney cast members are the soul of The Walt Disney Company. They create magic for guests around the world, and, hopefully, Disney will do everything in their power to protect the rights of their workers.
