What You May Have Missed in "We Call it Imagineering" Episode 3
The latest episode of “We Call it Imagineering" has debuted and that means that all of us have watched it once, and then have rewatched it to spot everything we can in the background and those quick editing moments. With so many things in the pipeline (both known and unknown), there is plenty of fodder to find if you stop and look for a moment.
First and foremost, this flying contraption, more akin to Da Vinci’s flying machine than a Soarin’ glider has made an appearance again, and more prominently. Speaking of Soarin’, peep that OG “Soarin’ Over California" footage. What is this vehicle for? This is not the first time we’ve seen it, having appeared in sizzle reels, etc. But we still don’t know what attraction this is destined for. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not a prototype that could play a role in the future. However, one fast shot shows it being hit with flashing strobes and lighting effects. Perhaps a clue? Or maybe just for showing off the tech?
Not as technically innovative is a new…spin…on a classic. We know that Rapunzel is getting her very own teacup style spinning attraction as part of the many changes coming to the Walt Disney Studios Paris as it completes a massive makeover to become Disney Adventure World.
For a brief moment, we can see some Imagineers taking a seat in a highly stylized version of the Fantasyland classic in what could only be the vehicles featured in the new Tangled-based attraction.
Alright EPCOT fans, brace yourselves. This could be remnants from the major “reimagining" of the second Walt Disney World theme park that officially concluded with the debut of Communicore Plaza and Hall…however, when two Imagineers are discussing the forthcoming Monsters, Inc. coaster attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, one might notice some art in the background. While we don’t have the CSI-style “zoom & enhance" capabilities here, we can very clearly make out The Land pavilion, with art underneath, and in another shot, the Imagination! Pavilion - notably with what appears to be a different marquee - though the image is quite blurred. Both of these pavilions were largely untouched as part of the reimagining of the park, but that doesn’t mean they will be untouched forever…
Earlier in the episode, some Imagineers are discussing the great things coming to Walt Disney World, with a special focus on the new Cars-themed road rally attraction heading toward Magic Kingdom at some point in the not-too-distant future. As they are discussing, we get rapid fire shots of a paper model, insinuating the track elevation changes, as well as a screen in other shots that reveals the track layout.
At first glance, this does not appear to be a simple copy & paste of Radiator Springs Racers from Disney California Adventure with the frontier/road rally twist, but rather a completely new experience with the Cars branding.
Also, unrelated to anything serious here…they built a mock-up of a road rally course, and given this lone drone shot, we are left wondering if that’s what all that construction was near some of the golf courses of Walt Disney World. Hmmmm. (Insert thinking emoji here.)
But perhaps the biggest “they knew what they were doing" move of the whole episode is the abundance (relatively speaking) of unacknowledged footage of Avengers Infinity Defense coming to Disney California Adventure in the near term. While a lot of focus was paid to Stark Flight Lab, we did see a number of shots of mockups and programming for this new E-Ticket attraction coming to Avengers Campus, including possible scenes, effects, the vehicle, and more.
To best grasp all of this imagery, be sure to watch the third episode of “We Call it Imagineering," which you can do below.
