“Daredevil: Born Again” Producers on the Potential for More Netflix-Era Marvel Heroes to Return in Season 2
The team behind “Born Again” on the big creative overhaul the show went through.
With Daredevil: Born Again’s first season about to debut, the creative team is discussing the big overhaul that occurred on the series, the impending production of Season 2, and the possibility of more of Matt Murdock’s Defenders teammates to return down the line.
What’s Happening:
- A big new overview in EW delves into the making of Daredevil: Born Again, which took a long road towards its Disney+ premiere on March 4.
- Though first-announced as an 18-episode season, Born Again Season 1 will now only be nine episodes, though work is already underway on the nine-episode Season 2, which is about to begin filming. This comes after a much-publicized overhaul of the series fairly far into production, which saw original Born Again head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord replaced by new showrunner Dario Scardapane (The Punisher).
- While Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio were always reprising their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum says that their original intention was to be somewhat vague on how connected Born Again was to the previous Daredevil series on Netflix. When the Hollywood strikes of 2023 forced a shutdown of the series mid-way through production, and they had time to stop and really look over what had been shot so far, the producers realized this approach wasn’t working and they decided to firmly tie the two series together, fully embracing the continuity and supporting characters the Netflix series had established.
- Though a good amount of the footage that had already been shot – including a big fight scene in episode 2 – is still included in Born Again Season 1, a lot was added as well, including bringing back several Daredevil actors like Deborah Ann Woll (“Karen Page"), Elden Henson (“Foggy Nelson"), Ayelet Zurer (“Vanessa Fisk"), and Wilson Bethel (“Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye") who were not in the original version.

- Fans had been particularly upset hearing about the absence of Karen and Foggy in Born Again, and though the team says they had always discussed possibilities for them down the line, Executive Producer Sana Amanat (Ms. Marvel) and Charlie Cox acknowledged the two always felt like the heart of the show, when it came to restoring missing pieces. Amanat also pushed for the return of Bethel’s character, who was a huge part of the third and final season of Daredevil, on the way to fully becoming comic book villain Bullseye.
- Born Again begins a year after Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has given up being Daredevil after crossing a certain line. The most obvious line that would be would be killing someone, which Matt vowed never to do, but when asked if that’s it, Charlie Cox tells EW “It's not entirely accurate, but it's a fair connection."
- With Season 2 about to begin filming, many questions continue to swirl about the return of other characters from the various Marvel Netflix series, especially given we know Jon Bernthal will return as the Punisher in Born Again Season 1. Asked about Elektra (Elodie Yung) and the villainous Ninja clan, The Hand, coming back, Amant says “100% percent it's in the back of our heads. Eventually we'll try to figure out a bit more with that."
- As for Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones), who all had their own Netflix series and also teamed with Daredevil in The Defenders series, Winderbaum told EW "I can't say much, but I'll tell you that it's so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. Obviously, we don't have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book, [where] if you can draw it, you can do it. We're dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."
