“Tiana” Scrapped at Disney+ as the Studio Shifts Focus Away from Longform Streaming Content

The series was originally announced in December of 2020.

The Disney+ continuation of Walt Disney Animation’s The Princess and the Frog is no longer moving forward.

What’s Happening:

  • The Hollywood Reporter has shared that Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially scrapped Tiana.
  • The series, which was set to continue the story of Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen after the events of the 2009 hit film, was announced for Disney+ back in December of 2020.
  • An unannounced feature-length project set to debut on the streamer was also canceled.
  • Tiana would have been a musical series with Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as the titular character.
  • According to sources close to the streaming series, Disney had made huge efforts to make the show work, including shakeups of the creative team, but the series couldn’t quite reach where it needed to be with production costs.
  • However, the animation studio is said to be developing a short-form special inspired by the 2009 film. Joyce Sherri is attached to direct and write with Steve Anderson also directing.
  • The project’s abandonment comes along with news that Walt Disney Studios Animation no longer intends to create longform content for the streaming service.
  • Last year, Pixar also  announced they would no longer prioritize episodic content on the streamer after the release of Dream Productions and Win or Lose.
  • Even the recent blockbuster Moana 2 was originally intended to be a longform series on Disney+ before being retrofitted into a feature-length theatrical release.
  • Walt Disney Animation Studios is set to continue their trend of releasing one theatrical film per year, in addition to shorts and special projects.
  • For 2025, Zootopia 2 is set to bring viewers back into the animal-filled metropolis on November 26th, with an announced feature set for 2026, and Frozen 3 set for 2027.
  • However, the streamer has found success in shortform content. Specifically, Bluey, which Disney+ licenses, was the most watched show in the US in 2024. Disney Animation also had success with their short-form projects with Zootopia+ and Baymax!
  • For those looking to experience an extension of The Princess and the Frog, Disneyland and Magic Kingdom debuted Tiana’s Bayou Adventure last year, inviting guests back into the world of the animated feature.
