Belinda Chandra Explores the Universe While Trying to Get Home – Breaking Down the “Doctor Who” Season 2 Trailer

Season 2 of “Doctor Who” premieres Saturday, April 12th on Disney+ and the BBC.

With a little over a month until the April 12th premiere of Doctor Who’s second season on Disney+, we’ve been treated to a full length trailer showcasing some of the amazing worlds and stories we’ll be exploring. Let’s go through the trailer shot-by-shot to see what it might be teasing for the future of the show.

The trailer begins in new companion Belinda Chandra’s (Varada Sethu) bedroom, where she gets out of bed to look at a mysterious bright light coming from her window.

We then see a point-of-view shot of a spaceship blasting off from Earth.

We then see a squadron of soldiers, including actor Christopher Chung (Slow Horses), as the Doctor says “there are forces beyond the universe. We think we are so clever, but we’re like children."

We’ll get a better look later in the trailer at what appears to be a giant spider-like spaceship, or perhaps just a giant spider.

UNIT’s Kate Lethbridge Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) is walking down a hallway when she comes across a door, in which a hand appears through the window. The Doctor continues, “and when these vast creatures look down on us, our entire reality is in danger."

The Doctor appears in one of his many new costumes for the season, looking rather dapper while looking up at a giant rampaging skeletal creature.

Classic series companion Melanie Bush (Bonnie Langford) makes another return this season, as she’s surrounded by crumbling houses.

Belinda asks the Doctor what his name is, and she brilliantly responds by saying she’ll call herself the Nurse.

As Belinda takes what appears to be her first steps aboard the TARDIS, we get a shot of the character Varada Sethu played in last year’s “Boom," Mundy Flynn, on the TARDIS info screen, along with a shot from that episode. The Doctor notes that “there is something already connecting us."

Belinda then appears to guess correctly that the TARDIS is a time machine. The Doctor affirms her guess by saying “boom" – I wonder if that’s an intentional reference to the episode?

We then get a shot of the TARDIS following a spaceship.

As she walks trepidatiously past some red robots with fun, emoji-like faces, Belinda says “I am not one of your adventures."

The Doctor opens up the door of the TARDIS while it’s floating in space, with a concerned look on his face.

Belinda tells the Doctor that he needs to get her home, while the Doctor responds to her by saying “this might be the long way round."

Another new costume is revealed as the Doctor opens the TARDIS door.

Looking rather dapper in a 1950s-inspired outfit, Belinda calls the Doctor, Scooby-Doo, while he in fact thinks of himself more as Velma.

Over a few shots of what appears to be happy times, the Doctor says “we are meant to voyage out there and own it."

Belinda says “we’re just popping in."

The Doctor and Belinda are then seen falling through space, albeit in a seemingly controlled fashion, while wearing spacesuits. He says “girl, you are beginning to enjoy this!" – before we see a beautiful vista of space.

We are then welcomed to the Interstellar Song Contest by newly confirmed guest Rylan, who will be playing a version of himself.

The Doctor and Belinda both seem pretty pleased by what they’re seeing, as they decide to stay.

We then get a shot of the mysterious Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson), seemingly sitting in the audience of the Interstellar Song Contest, saying “I love a good show."

Cue another shot of the soldiers from earlier in the trailer, as the voiceover of the Doctor continues by saying “it’s all a game to them."

This quite creepy mask then appears to scream, with a light emanating from behind.

We get to hear Alan Cumming as the voice of Mr. Ring-a-Ding, a lively and funny cartoon character living in Sunny Town with his friend, Sunshine Sally.

While we saw this in the previous teaser, it's worth including once again, as we get an impressive shot of Mr. Ring-a-Ding appearing to claw his way out of a movie theater screen as two patrons react in terror.

The Doctor then looks upon a wall of missing men.

Face to face with another man, that man says to the Doctor, “tell a story."

What appears to be a workshop or restaurant from perhaps the 1970s is then seen floating through space, with the Doctor and others hanging on for dear life.

We get a shot of a mysterious creature, while Millie Gibson makes her return as Ruby Sunday. Talking to Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), who is rumored to be playing her boyfriend, she says “it wants you scared." When he asks why, she replies “because it likes the taste" and a hand appears behind Jonah.

We then get a shot of a mysterious alien world, complete with lasers blasting from spaceships.

Talking to Belinda, the Doctor says “I promised that I would keep you safe," while she responds “but you can’t."

Quite appropriately, the Doctor himself is then seen floating in the vacuum of space.

Alongside some quick shots of the couple, more spaceships and the promised better look at the spider creature, the Doctor states that he will take her home.

Doctor Who will premiere on Saturday, April 12th at 12 a.m. PDT / 3 a.m. EDT on Disney+, where available, and will be exclusively accessible on the BBC and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
