Marvel Television Halts Production on Three Projects Amidst Development Restructure
It is unknown if "Nova," "Strange Academy," or "Terror, Inc." will move forward.
Marvel has paused development on three planned projects as the studio restructures how they approach television series.
What’s Happening:
- Deadline exclusively reports that Marvel Television has paused production on Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc.
- While the projects were never officially greenlit, the newsource reports that the studio has shifted focus for the time being and may revisit these ideas down the line.
- The decision to halt these projects comes from a major overhaul of Marvel’s television production.
- Previously, the studio would announce a slate of television shows that would lay out the next years of content. This is very similar to how they handle their MCU cinematic releases.
- However, as time has passed, Marvel has decided to take a more traditional approach to TV development, developing more projects and picking the best to move forward.
- Also, as the industry changes and audiences have lost the fervor they once had for superhero content, it makes more financial sense to commit to a less aggressive content release cycle.
- Brad Winderbaum, the head of TV, Streaming, and Animation at Marvel Studios, previously shared “We’re developing more than we make now, so we’re actually have a few different things brewing that we might see through to at least a pilot script to see if we want to make it. But, there’s a lot of opportunities out there, it’s hard to choose favorites… We’re really being careful about what we choose to do next."
- Nova, announced in 2022, was originally set to be penned by Sabir Pirzada. Work on the project was active as recently as last December, when Criminal Minds’ Ed Bernero had been hired as showrunner and writer for the series, replacing Pirzada.
- This year, Marvel Television is set to release Daredevil: Born Again on March 4th, Ironheart on June 24th, and Wonder Man sometime this Winter.
