Two Disney Legends and “Mulan Sisters” Reunite in Magical Moment After Recent Performance
It was a reunion Disney fans everywhere will love between “Mulan Sisters" - the voices of the classic animated character together, shared by Disney Legend Ming-Na Wen herself.
What’s Happening:
- Disney Legend Ming-Na Wen took to X recently to mark a very special occasion as she went to visit Disney Legend Lea Salonga after her performance alongside Bernadette Peters.
- On the surface, this might just be a “great performance, good to see you" kind of well-wishing - but alas, to most Disney fans it’s substantially more than that.
- This is because both Ming-Na and Lea have lent their vocal talents to Mulan, the titular hero from the 1998 film from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
- Ming-Na provided the speaking voice of Mulan, while Lea provided the singing voice of the favorite character. Thus prompting Ming-Na to write in her post - “Mulan sisters unite!"
In 1993, Ming-Na made her big screen debut in the lead role of June in Disney’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Amy Tan’s popular novel The Joy Luck Club for Hollywood Pictures.
One of Ming-Na’s most important roles came soon after she arrived in Hollywood, when she landed the title role in Disney’s animated classic Mulan, for which she received an Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Voice Acting by a Female Performer.
The film was also honored with several Annie Awards from ASIFA-Hollywood, the International Animated Film Society.
Ming-Na has returned to the role of the heroic Fa Mulan in numerous projects, including an animated sequel, video games Kingdom Hearts II and Disney Infinity 3.0, on television’s House of Mouse and Sofia the First, and in the 2018 Walt Disney Animation Studios film Ralph Breaks the Internet. She was named a Disney Legend in 2019.
In the field of musical theatre, Lea Salonga has been honored with the Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World awards. In addition, she holds the distinction of having played the vocal roles of two Disney leading ladies—the spectacular singing voices of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, and Mulan. Lea sang again as Mulan in the direct-to-video sequel Mulan II. She was named a Disney Legend in 2011.
Currently, Lea is headlining Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, which celebrates the life and work of the great Stephen Sondheim, where she stars alongside Bernadette Peters, whom Ming-Na also shouted out in the post.
