“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” Creative Team Discusses Visual and Sound Design of Series In New Video from Lucasfilm

John Knoll, Doug Chiang, and David W. Collins talk about their contributions to the Disney+ series.

Now that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew completed its season on Disney+ last week, Lucasfilm has released a new behind-the-scenes video covering some of the design elements of the series with its accomplished creative team.

What’s happening:

  • A new Star Wars: Skeleton Crew behind-the-scenes video has been released via Lucasfilm’s official Star Wars YouTube channel.
  • In the video, Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll, Production Designer Doug Chiang, and Sound Designer David W. Collins each talk about their contributions to the series and the unique challenges it presented.
  • The trio also touch upon the influence of 1980s Steven Spielberg movies like The Goonies and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial on Skeleton Crew.

What they’re saying:

  • John Knoll: “My first introduction to Skeleton Crew was described as ‘Goonies in space.’ There was a desire to do a more kid-friendly version of Star Wars that evoked the sense of wonder and magic of Spielberg movies from the 1980s."
  • Doug Chiang: “I remember reading the original scripts– each episode brought a smile to my face, because each one had the adventure and the calling of something new that was really fascinating. The audience gets to experience it from the point-of-view of the kids. They’re discovering this new Star Wars world through their lens."
  • David W. Collins: “At Attin was a really unique challenge, because it’s a place that feels very familiar to my childhood, but it’s also Star Wars. What does the traffic on At Attin sound like? What do the school bells sound like? Before you put it in, it just sounds like the set. Once you put in those details, it feels like a real place."

The complete season of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is now available to stream, exclusively via Disney+.
