Recap: Team Spider-Man Continues to Grow in Latest Episode of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man keeps leaving us with cliffhangers. The last episode of the Disney+ series saw Harry Osborn learning about Peter being Spider-Man, while also introducing a gaggle of supervillains. It doesn’t take long for almost all of them to be thrown into action.
The episode opens with Otto Octavius welcoming Mila into his lab. She gives him the stolen money in exchange for a piece of tech that will help her free her comrades. Octavius gives her a helmet with a point in the center that shoots lasers. She ignores the rest of his instructions. It appears this helmet would be a nod to Mila being this universe’s version of the villain known as Unicorn. After Mila leaves, Octavius complains to his assistant that his name should be bigger than Stark, Banner and Osborn.
Peter and Harry sit in a boardroom awaiting the arrival of Norman. He eventually bursts in and pitches the idea of Harry joining team Spider-Man. Harry shows his excitement to be Spider-Man’s “dude at the desk," a riff on the “guy in the chair" gag from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Norman is called away for Oscorp duties and Harry offers to give Peter a ride to school. They pull up outside the school in Harry’s car, which obviously boosts his reputation.
Nico doesn’t approve of Peter’s new social media celebrity friend. She expresses some concern for him, but it’s clear she means it more for herself. She doesn’t want her friend to leave her behind.
Lonnie meets with the football coach, who scolds him for skipping practice. The coach reminds him he is on a path to a pro football career. Lonnie ignores a call from Big Don and reassures the coach he is dedicated to his team. Lonnie leaves the office to find Pearl waiting for him, but he brushes off the situation and walks her to class.
Nico discusses the Sokovia Accords situation with Peter while he looks at his phone. She explains that she doesn’t necessarily disagree with the accords. She also questions if Peter is even listening to her and he surprises her with tickets to see a movie.
Lonnie takes a call from Big Don in the lockerroom. Donovan wants Lonnie at the 110 because the Scorpions are on their turf so he’s calling for all hands on deck. Lonnie tries to explain that he has football practice but he sees that some of the gang is there to pick him up.
Spider-Man goes on patrol but is caught off guard by Harry’s voice in his ear. Harry shares that he doesn’t have any real friends before he changes the conversation to the suit. They both agree that it should have more color and learn that they are both fans of Captain America. Harry shares a conspiracy theory that the real Cap died and it’s his clone that’s been acting as him. There have been a number of Cap clones and knockoffs in the comics that this could be referencing.
Mila breaks the rest of her crew out of prison using her new helmet from Octavius. Roxanna says she looks like a rhino with the helmet but she calls herself more of a unicorn, hammering home the comics name.
Harry informs Spider-Man of the jailbreak and he swings off towards it. He arrives to find Unicorn destroying things with he lasers. The two fight as the rest of the crew discusses using the distraction to escape. Mikhail wants to stay behind to help Mila but the other two leave.
Lonnie arrives to back the 110 in what appears to be a standoff between them and the Scorpions. Mac Gargan shows up to inform Donovan that he and Scorpions are moving in, but Donovan pushes back. The two gangs rush in to fight each other and we cut between that and Spidey’s fight with Unicorn. Harry tries to find a weakness for him and points out the helmet. Mikhail tries to convince Mila to leave but she refuses and attacks Spider-Man again.
Lonnie avoids actually throwing any punches in his fight and Gargan begins to approach Donovan. Meanwhile, Mila sets her sights on Mikhail and Spidey jumps in just in time to save him, taking a blast from Mila. Lonnie jumps in to save Donovan from Gargan. The gang leader winds up on top of Lonnie with a knife in his hand but Camila pulls him off as the police arrive and everyone scatters. Mikhail wakes up for find Spider-Man unconscious from the blast. Mila approaches and picks up Spider-Man but Mikhail pulls off her helmet before she can eliminate him. Spidey takes the helmet and webs up Mila. He thanks Mikhail, but the criminal tells him that if they ever cross paths again he will end him, hinting at his possible future as the Rhino.
Peter forgets he was supposed to meet Nico at the movies and he rushes there just in time. Nico is happy to see him but she is thrown off when Harry shows up. The boys head inside and Nico mutters ‘it’s fine" to herself before heading in. Clearly, it’s not fine.
At the 110, Donovan celebrates Lonnie for saving him from Gargan. Lonnie requests that he and everyone else stop calling him superstar. Instead, they give him a new nickname: Tombstone. This is the name Lonnie takes in the comics as he becomes a notorious crime lord. The episode comes to a close with Lonnie taking a liking to his new nickname.
While the bigger picture is being painted with Doctor Octopus at its center, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man continues to tell entertaining stories, much like a comic would. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together in the end.
