Recap: Peter Struggles to Balance His Personal Life and Super Hero Life in Latest “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has been swinging through some of the hero’s rogues gallery, while building a bigger story over the first half of its 10-episode first season. Now, things seem to be coming together as things are reaching new highs for Peter Parker and new lows for Lonnie Lincoln.
The episode opens with Peter trying to get Nico’s attention in the middle of class, but instead getting himself and another student in trouble. After class, the teacher scolds Peter and says she doesn’t want another student put on probation, hinting at what’s going on with Lonnie.
In the locker room, the football coach takes Lonnie’s jersey and laments him being removed from the team. Lonnie refuses and handshake and leaves. In the hallway, Pearl tries to get information from Lonnie but he brushes it off as family issues and leaves her despite her protests.
Peter asks Nico if she’s mad at him and she says she’s not. He pitches that the two of them hang out with Harry at his apartment. Nico is hesitant but Peter insists the three of them could be good friends. Lonnie is not in class to partner with Peter so he is assigned to work with Pearl and her partner. Pearl expresses her anger toward Lonnie at Peter and it’s clear he still has no idea what’s going on.
Lonnie gets home and lies to his parents about his football practice being canceled. Andre argues with Lonnie about him taking his brother’s sport in the 110. Lonnie leaves the house in anger and a car starts following him.
At Oscorp, Harry and Peter discuss their plans before Norman enters dressed in a tux. He explains that he is heading to a charity dinner and they’re all taking the night off. Harry heads off to grab his bag and Peter sees Jeanne sneak into the office. He tells her she’s not supposed to be there and he is only there because Harry gave him special access. She playfully turns around and leaves. What is Jeanne up to?
Peter, Nico and Harry struggle to gel as friends while Peter tries to break the ice. They sift through vintage movies as they try to decide what to watch. Nico picks a movie called Zaniac!, a reference to a Marvel villain who has appeared in both comics and Loki season two. Peter is briefly distracted by a text from Dr. Connors, but turns off his phone to be with his friends.
At the charity dinner, we learn that everyone is gathered to raise money for those affected by the explosion in Lagos, again referencing the events of Captain America: Civil War. Norman is named as a donor and if you listen carefully, the next name that is listed is Eleanor Bishop of Bishop Securities. This is the mother of Kate Bishop, whom we got to know in Marvel’s Hawkeye.
Norman approaches Secretary Ross and offers assistance with the pursuit of Steve Rogers. He also informs him that he is employing a super hero of his own, and shows him information on Spider-Man. He does not, however, show him that Peter is Spider-Man. Instead, he lists Jonathan Gallo, his security guard, as Spider-Man’s secret identity. In the comics, Gallo is a Spider-Man adjacent hero known as Ricochet. Norman agrees to have Gallo register with the Sokovia Accords before Ross points out a security breach at Oscorp and Norman excuses himself.
The kids try playing every board game at once before they’re interrupted by Harry’s phone. Norman asks him to put Peter on the form and he lets him know about the security breach. He asks Peter to suit up and investigate the situation. Peter objects at first but eventually agrees. He makes the excuse that he’s going to run out to get more soda and leaves his friends there.
Lonnie notices he is being followed and we see that it is Carmilla of the Scorpions who is tailing him. He takes off running and Carmilla follows. Eventually, Lonnie is saved by a couple members of the 110, but Carmilla sneakily sees where they are going.
Spider-Man arrives at Oscorp to find the guards unconscious before he is alerted by Norman’s computer. Meanwhile, Harry and Nico struggle with awkwardly trying to become friends. Harry notices Nico’s tarot cards and expresses interest and she agrees to give him a reading.
Peter tries to find what is going on with Norman’s computer before a shadow catches his eye and he chases after it. He follows a figure up to the roof and we see that it is Daredevil, while the theme song from the Netflix series plays. The two square off in an awesome action sequence that is sure to have Marvel fans on the edge of their seats. Daredevil explains that Norman is hiding something and he eventually gets the better of Spidey, knocking him out with his billy club.
Nico gives Harry a tarot reading, flipping the Devil card, which looks suspiciously like Mephisto. I know, I know. We won’t get into that again. It becomes clear that Harry is not actually into tarot though and things get a bit heated between the two of them. Nico talks up her friendship with Peter and says they tell each other everything. Harry takes that to mean she knows about Spider-Man.
Spider-Man wakes up on the roof with Gallo standing over him. He hands Spidey a phone and Norman tells him to meet him in his office. Norman explains that the thief must have been sent by Otto Octavius, who previously worked with him at Oscorp. He says Octavius hated sharing the recognition though and he took their projects and left. They realize they need to stop Octavius to keep these weapons from getting out. Peter pushes back on the idea of Daredevil working with Octavius, but Norman thinks Octavius hired a professional because he’s getting nervous.
Peter realizes he has to rush back to his friends. When he arrives, Nico asks about Spider-Man, jokingly. She clearly doesn’t believe Harry about his secret. She pulls at Peter’s backpack and his Spider-Man mask and designs fall out. Nico is seemingly heartbroken that Peter didn’t tell her and she leaves.
At the 110, Donovan comforts Lonnie, who is distraught after being followed by Carmilla. Outside, Carmilla calls Gargan to let him know the 110 led her to their hideout. Meanwhile, Gargan is being outfitted by Octavius with his classic Scorpion tail and armor. Things are about to get very bad for the 110th Street Gang.
A fight with Daredevil and a tease of a supervillain? Each episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man gets stronger as the story progresses in a lot of different and exciting ways.
