Photos: Scaffolding Continues to Rise on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
The attraction temporarily closed on January 6th, 2025.
For the rest of 2025, Big Thunder Mountain will be closed for an extended refurbishment with major work continuing on the attraction.
Slow Movin’ Train Up Ahead:
- Beginning on January 6th, 2025, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom began a major refurbishment that has already seen large-scale work happening on the attraction.
- Almost immediately after the attraction’s closure, track on the popular roller coaster was removed, leaving large chunks of the attraction left with covers and cones where track once stood.
- Now, with much of the removal complete, many of the sets and props on the attraction have been covered in scaffolding.
- While most of the construction isn’t visible from the attraction’s main entrance, we jumped aboard the Walt Disney World Railroad to take a look at the ride’s outdoor ride sections.
- Currently, the old western town facades just before the attraction’s second lift hill are in the process of being covered in scaffolding. The spinning opossum tree is also being touched up.
- The themed supports on the ride’s second lift has also been removed with scaffolding covering the entire section.
- On the backside of the mountain, not much has changed since the initial track removal.
- As of now, specifics surrounding the refurbishment have not been shared, but Disney has promised “new magic" will be added to the wildest ride in the wilderness. Big Thunder Mountain is set to reopen sometime in 2026.
- It’ll be a long year waiting to get back on the Magic Kingdom mountain, but we can’t wait to see what Imagineering has in store for the attraction.
