Celebrate 50 Years of Space Mountain with the Soundscapes of the Attraction Around the Globe
Not featured: the sounds of a 50-year old lift hill.
Fans can celebrate the 50th anniversary of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World with a celebration of all the Space Mountain soundscapes around the world.
What’s Happening:
- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World, Disney Parks has shared a special video featuring the sounds and music of Space Mountains around the globe.
- The special new video, available on YouTube, features not only the music you might hear as you wait or exit the attraction, but also the various sounds and radio calls from Mission Control, etc that you hear surrounding the iconic ride.
- The video also features visuals and iconography from the various Space Mountain attractions, also mentioning that the soundscape is presented in Starry-O-Phonic sound, which Walt Disney World devotees will recognize as the sound system that provides much of the audio for the attraction. Unlike California, Paris, or Hong Kong, which have on-board audio systems, Space Mountain in Florida has speakers placed alongside the track that provide a soundtrack to the original attraction that didn’t have one when it originally opened in 1975. The sound system was added back in 2010.
- Star Wars fans, don’t worry. The Hyperspace Mountain soundscapes also make an appearance in this special video. Absent from this video, something only the most devoted will probably notice, any references to FedEx or RCA.
- January 15th, 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Since it opened back in 1975, it has been replicated at every Disney Destination around the globe except for Shanghai, which instead got TRON Lightcycle Power Run, which has its roots firmly in Space Mountain itself.
- Though the idea of an indoor roller coaster in the dark is not as novel now, the original Space Mountain concept of being indoors, blasting through the darkness of space, giving a level of thrill and perception of high speed while still being a family friendly coaster, wowed guests from the jump.
- It immediately became a star at the park and was replicated soon after in 1977 at Disneyland Park in California, making Space Mountain one of the rare attractions that debuted in Florida first before making its way to Walt’s original Magic Kingdom, though Walt and famed Imagineer John Hench had been speaking of a similar attraction called “Space Port" or “Space Voyage" since 1964.
