“Project Runway” Star Tim Gunn Not Returning For Rebooted 21st Season

Sounds like the producers didn't want to make it work.

Project Runway star Tim Gunn will not be returning to the Freeform reboot of the hit reality competition series, though Heidi Klum will be.

What’s Happening:

  • Announced back in October of 2024, the 21st season of the hit fashion-design competition will be making the jump to Freeform, Hulu, and Disney+ later this year and will be returning to form, with host Heidi Klum set to return as well.
  • However, synonymous with Project Runway is series mentor and eventual co-host Tim Gunn, who will reportedly NOT be returning to this new season along with Klum.
  • Gunn left the series in 2017, along with Klum, before he leapt to Amazon’s Making the Cut in 2018. With the announcement of Klum returning, many fans believed that Gunn would be returning as well, including Klum herself.
  • A new interview with People reveals that is not exactly what went down.
  • Gunn explains, "Heidi sent me a text saying, 'There's talk about bringing Project Runway back with us, with you and me, and would you do it?'...So Heidi and I were texting and texting, and several months later, she sent me a text asking, 'Are you happy with your contract?'...  'Well, I haven't seen a contract, And she said, 'You haven't?' No. So I called my agent and he knew things were going on, but he contacted the executive producers of this new show, and they said, 'We don't want him.' And [my agent] said… “The two of them won an Emmy together as hosts, and now you're going to separate them?' And they said yes."
  • Gunn also explained that the producers were willing to offer him a cameo in the upcoming season, but he refused, adding “No thank you. And as Heidi would say, you're either in or you're out. And I'm out."
  • After Gunn left, famed designer Christian Siriano (who himself was a contestant on Project Runway) took over the mentor position on the series, and it is unclear at this time if he will be returning in this spot.
  • Project Runway originally debuted back in 2004, breaking new ground and helping to  revolutionize the reality competition genre. Since then, Project Runway has aired in more than 125 countries, and launched the careers of prolific designers, including Christian Siriano, Austin Scarlett, Leanne Marshall, Irina Shabayeva, Michael Costello and Bishme Cromartie, among many others.
  • Project Runway is produced by Spyglass Media Group and Alfred Street Industries. Gary Barber serves as executive producer for Spyglass. Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz, Dan Volpe, and Nan Strait serve as executive producers for Alfred Street Industries.
  • Season 21 of Project Runway will feature 10 episodes aired weekly. The judges and premiere date have not yet been announced.
