What’s Happening:

  • People Magazine is reporting that Michael Urie and Becki Newton are planning to rewatch Ugly Betty and are inviting fans along for the ride in a new podcast.
  • Titled Still Ugly, the Rabbit Grin Productions podcast will see Urie (Marc St. James) and Newton (Amanda Tanen) relive each episode, discussing the plot, behind-the-scenes stories, and reflect on their memories from the series.
  • Special guest appearances from the original cast will be featured, including America Ferrera, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, and more.
  • Urie shared with the newsource, “Becki and I have never stopped being really, really close. From the minute we finished the show until now, we have remained in very close contact. We see each other all the time. We text literally every day. This is an idea that has been in the back of our minds for a long time. We’d thought about it and every time I’d see another show doing it, I get really jealous."
  • Newton also chimed in, expressing how rewatching the series all these years later has broadened their perspective on the show and its impact it had on audiences.
  • Reflecting on the show’s original 2006-2010 run, Newton stated “I think watching it again just reiterates this, that we were part of something really special."

  • As they revisit the series, the pair will look at Ugly Betty through a modern perspective.
  • Urie expressed how, while the show has outdated quips and remarks, that the progressive series was always good about holding characters accountable for their words.
  • Elaborating, Urie explained “There are definitely things where some characters say the wrong thing. They’ll say something racist or transphobic, but they always get theirs. It’s like they’re villains and they say it and then they’re punished for saying it"
  • Ugly Betty’s queer representation, female empowerment themes, and Latina representation was uncommon on television. The series still maintains a sense of cultural impact that transcends the series four year run, and the pair is excited to step back into that world with fans.
  • Still Ugly is set to premiere this month, with video and audio episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays.
  • You’ll be able to find episodes for the series on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other podcast platforms.
