Props From “A Complete Unknown” to be Displayed at Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie Centers

There will also be a private event with the film’s costume designer and music supervisor in Tulsa, OK.

Prop displays for Searchlight Pictures’ A Complete Unknown will soon be available for guests to see at both the Bob Dylan Center and Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

What’s Happening:

  • The displays are part of a shared exhibit called “Stepping into the Unknown," which will open on February 28.
  • Variety, who announced the news, notes this is the first time both centers will be running a simultaneous exhibit in this manner.
  • Though A Complete Unknown centers on Bob Dylan, folk singer Woody Guthrie is a pivotal figure in the film as well. The film kicks off with the young Dylan (played by Timothée Chalamet) going to visit an idol of his, the ailing Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), in the hospital - where a chance meeting with Guthrie’s friend, Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), helps kick off Dylan’s career.
  • The exhibit is touted as helping to “illuminate the deep bond between the two hugely influential American songwriters."
  • Props from the film that will be part of the display include Guthrie’s harmonica; a letter Dylan writes to Guthrie; Johnny Cash’s letters to Dylan; a napkin with the lyrics to “Blowin’ in the Wind" written on them; and some of the film’s fabricated album covers featuring cast members like Chalamet and Elle Fanning recreating famous real life covers.
  • Prior to the exhibit opening to the public, the centers will also team for a private event on February 27 at Tulsa’s Circle Cinema featuring A Complete Unknown’s Oscar-nominated costume designer, Arianne Phillips, and music supervisor Steve Gizicki.
  • Members have early access to reserve a free ticket in a pre-sale beginning February 13 at 12:00pm CT. Tickets will become available to the general public at 12:00pm CT on February 17
  • A Complete Unknown has eight Academy Award nominations, with Phillips joined by Chalamet for Best Actor, James Mangold for Best Director, Monica Barbaro for Best Supporting Actress, Edward Norton for Best Supporting Actor, and nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound, and the film itself nominated for Best Picture.

What They’re Saying:

  • Steve Higgins, managing director of the American Song Archives: “As moviegoers learned from A Complete Unknown, the relationship between Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie is essential to an understanding of 20th century American music. This exhibit will amplify that story by connecting it to the real-life artifacts in our collections."
